Deer are browsers and grazers. They feed on a variety of vegetation, depending
on what is available. These animals prefer buds and twigs of trees and shrubs,
cacti and many other plants. In winter, Whitetail Deer feed on evergreen trees.
These animals are crepuscular and are active before dawn and at dusk. Whitetail Deer - Predation
Whitetail Deer are preyed on by large number of predators, such as bears, lions,
coyotes, wolves and domestic dogs. Adults are able to defend with their hooves,
but young fawns are rather vulnerable and are easy prey for every carnivorous
predator. Like all deer, Whitetail Deer have keen hearing and eyesight, but rely
mainly on the sense of smell to detect danger and their ability to bound and to
run fast through dense vegetation. Whitetail Deer - Behavior
Whitetail Deer are very shy and
nervous. At the sight of danger they flee away. Whitetail Deer are very agile
and can bound at speed of up to 30 miles per hour. They are also good swimmers
and often escape predators and insects in water. Whitetail Deer are solitary
animals, except for does with fawns. During the rut season, males establish
dominance, which is based on their age and strength. Whitetail Deer fight each
other severely and the fights may last for many hours. Whitetail Deer - General Info Links
